If you’ve not got much cash to spend on your escape, a ‘staycation’ can be a fantastic option to reduce the carbon footprint of air travel and keep the money cost down too. Holidays in the UK or Ireland offer so many amazing destinations, who needs to jet off across the world to relax and see the sights?
Wales isn’t all sheep and fields, there are stunning landscapes including mountains, rural architecture and coastlines to die for. There are some amazing bargains to be had for holidays in Wales, so if you’re looking for a countryside retreat that’s a bit closer to home, Wales is the perfect place to go. It’s a great option for families, walking enthusiasts and even for romantic escapes. Just imagine, a holiday in some of the most beautiful scenery, fantastic walks and amazing locally-produced food!
York has been at the heart of British Historical Culture and Architecture for centuries and is easily accessible from north and south. You’ll encounter some of the most stunning architecture in the country, and the surrounding countryside is stunning, and well worth a visit. Visit the York Castle Museum, Dungeons, gardens and art galleries or try the historical and ghost walks. Plus, the average cost of a B&B is about £30, which is about a quarter of the average price of London. Steeped in history, there are plenty of free things to see and do to expand your mind and cultural knowledge, plus it’s postcard-level pretty. If you’re a train buff, the York Railway Museum is a little piece of heaven!
Fancy a trip to the seaside, with the hustle and bustle of a city stay? If so, Brighton is the place for you. The night life is revered, with live music and bars along the waterfront and in the famous ‘Lanes’. As well as the scenic beaches, there are nearly 100 green spaces and parks. Embrace the traditional British seaside holiday vibe, with fish and chips on the sea front and fairground rides on the pier. Whilst it’s undoubtedly best to come here during the summer period, you can have a fun seaside trip to Brighton at any time of year.
A little further along the South Coast from Brighton, you can discover miles of the famous Jurassic coastline, coastal towns, fishing villages and stunning areas of natural beauty. Expect a quieter and more rural trip, with beautiful places like Lyme Regis which are brimming with historical significance, boast stunning views and beaches, and with some of the best fossil hunting in all of the UK. The region of Lulworth Cove, Durdle Door, Sandbanks and the Purbecks are an amazing option for walks and coastal views, and since it’s just on the doorstep of Bournemouth and Poole, you’re not far from civilisation if you crave the conveniences of larger towns.
Flights to Ireland are extremely cheap, and most local airports have flights to one of their famous cities, making travelling to places like Belfast and Dublin incredibly convenient. Belfast is home to the UNESCO World Heritage site ‘The Giants Causeway’ which is a must-see for fans of geology and intriguing coastal views. The extraordinary Titanic Museum is only a short journey from Belfast’s city centre and is well worth a visit. Discover the history of the Titanic, from its innovative design, to what really happened on the fateful day it sunk. Dublin is packed full of history, with its literary past, amazing architecture, castles and the poignant Kilmainham Gaol.
